testing is important
How do I find out for sure if I have chlamydia or gonorrhea?
If you ever have any symptoms, like pain on urination, get tested right away!
If you don’t have any symptoms and are a woman age 25 years or younger, you should get tested every year or when a doctor recommends.
Everybody should get tested whenever they change sex partners or if they have more than one partner.
Chlamydia and gonorrhea tests are different from other tests like pap smears, pelvic exams or HIV tests. In a chlamydia and gonorrhea test, you either pee into a cup or a doctor takes a small sample of cells from wherever you might be infected. This could be in your vagina, mouth, anus or penis.
You always should ask your doctor for chlamydia and gonorrhea tests by name – don’t just assume you are being tested!
If I'm under 18, can I get tested without my parents' permission?
Yes. In California, if you are age 12 or older you can get a confidential STD test without your parents' permission
- it's the law!
